Tuvalu is an island country in Polynesia in Oceania. Formerly known as Ellice Islands, the country lies north of Fiji, northeast and east of the Santa Cruz Islands, northwest of Samoa and Wallis and Futuna, west of Tokelau, southeast of Nauru and south of Kiribati.

Located in the Pacific Ocean, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands were part of the British Empire from 1892 to 1976. The Ellice Islands became Tuvalu on October 1, 1978 while the Gilbert Islands became part of Kiribati on July 12, 1979.

On September 5, 2000, Tuvalu was admitted to the United Nations. The country’s incumbent and 13th prime minister Kausea Natano, 64, assumed office on September 19, 2019.
