Oldsmar, Florida’s Garrett Smith runs away from Oath Keepers rally, charged with destructive device possession


Garrett James Smith, 22, of Oldsmar, Pinellas County, Florida, United States has been arrested. He was charged with making, possessing or discharging a destructive device, loitering and prowling.

In 2019, Smith went to Tennessee, USA to attend a religious retreat called Young Life. Dennis Fuller, who helps run the retreat, told The Daily Beast that Smith was “an odd duck” who “just doesn’t think like everyone else.”

At around 5:00 p.m. on January 6, 2022, a protest took place in front of the Pinellas County Justice Center in Clearwater, Pinellas County in reference to the incarceration of Oath Keepers member Jeremy Michael Brown, 47, of Tampa, Florida. Currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail in Clearwater, he is facing federal charges stemming from incident at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., USA exactly a year ago.

At around 7:24 p.m., Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies observed Smith running away from the direction of the Oath Keepers protest while carrying a black backpack. Dressed in all black clothing and a face covering, he was caught and arrested by the deputies in Clearwater.


An explosive device, along with additional items, was located in Smith’s backpack. More explosive devices were found in his home in Oldsmar, where he lived with his parents.

Smith’s bond was set at $300,000. He had no criminal history prior to the arrest, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
