Robert Lane Saget was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States to a Jewish family. His father Benjamin Saget was a supermarket executive while his mother Rosalyn “Dolly” Comer Saget was a hospital administrator.

Benjamin died from complications of congestive heart failure in 2007 and Dolly died of abdominal cancer in 2014. Their daughters Andrea Saget and Gay Saget died of aneurysm at age 34 and of scleroderma at age 47, respectively.
