Gavin Haynes, 35 of Covington, Virginia, United States has been arrested. He works at Alleghany High School in Alleghany County, Virginia where he teaches sports exercise, health science, weightlifting and advanced physical education.
On January 10, 2022, Haynes was indicted on 31 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship. On January 18, 2022, he was arrested.
Out of the 31 felony charges, 22 are in connection with June 10, 2010 while one is with August 1, 2010. Eight of the crimes were allegedly committed on August 1, 2012 while two allegedly happened on August 1, 2016. On January 21, 2021, Alleghany County Public Schools placed him on administrative leave after being made aware of the allegations against him.
According to the Alleghany Sheriff’s Office, Haynes is being held with no bond at the Alleghany County Jail in Covington. The Virginia State Police‘s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is working the case.
Haynes is a former player and assistant coach for the Alleghany Mountaineers baseball team. He has served as the junior varsity boys basketball head coach, the junior varsity baseball head coach and an assistant varsity football coach during his tenure as a ninth grade PE teacher at Alleghany High School.
The school is about four miles east of Covington City although it has a Covington mailing address. Its current building opened as Alleghany County High School in 1963.
In 1983, Clifton Forge High School in Clifton Forge, Alleghany County closed down. Its students consolidated with Alleghany County High School and formed Alleghany High School.
