Accused of sending a video with pornographic content to a student, Harris was placed on leave from UCLA in March 2021. His postdoctoral status in the university was set to expire in June 2021.

In November 2021, Harris tried to buy a handgun but a protection order in California prohibited him from buying or owning a firearm. On January 30, 2022, he posted a YouTube video titled “UCLA PHILOSOPHY (MASS SHOOTING)” and emailed the link of the video to some members of UCLA’s Department of Philosophy along with an 803-page manifesto he authored with specific threats towards them.

In the manifesto, Harris mentioned committing violence in Boulder. Authorities found that he was living in an apartment in Boulder.

On February 1, 2022, Harris was arrested after a standoff with police in Boulder and is expected to face federal charges. That day, UCLA cancelled all in-person classes.

UCLA was established on May 23, 1919. It was called the Southern Branch of the University of California from 1919 to 1927 and the University of California at Los Angeles from 1927 to 1958.

Including transfers, UCLA had 168,000 undergraduate applicants for Fall 2021. The university incumbent and sixth chancellor Gene D. Block, 73, assumed office on August 1, 2007.

  1. It is clear that this guy has some serious mental health issues and the University clearly recognized that this guy wasn’t playing with a full deck. And a philosophy teacher at that!!
