US Virgin Islands’ Katie Tannenbaum competes at 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China

Katie Tannenbaum, 36, is the sole representative of the United States Virgin Islands at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Hosted by Beijing, China, the international winter multisport event will be held from February 4-20, 2022.

Born in California, USA, Tannenbaum graduated from the University of California in Santa Barbara, California in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. In 2010, she earned her master’s degree in environmental science from the same university.

Tannenbaum started in skeleton in 2010. After finishing 12th at the 2011 North American Cup in Lake Placid, New York, USA, Tannenbaum competed in the World Championships in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Competing on the Skeleton World Cup circuit for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Tannenbaum was not able to earn the territory a quota spot for the 2018 Winter Olympics. She will compete in women’s skeleton at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

In July 2015, Beijing was elected as the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics at the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This marks the first time the Winter Olympics is held in China.

Including Tannenbaum, a total of 2,871 athletes from 91 countries and territories will compete in 109 events in seven sports. The events will be held not only in Beijing but also in other parts of China including Yanqing and Chongli.

Aside from skeleton, Tannenbaum is also into acroyoga. She a mathematics instructor at the University of the Virgin Islands, which has three locations namely St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.
