Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Mekhi Camden Speed arrested; Amir Locke’s cousin to be tried as an adult?

Mekhi Camden Speed, 17, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States has been arrested. His cousin Amir Rahkare Locke, 22, was fatally shot by Minneapolis Police Department officer Mark Hanneman, 34, on February 2, 2022.

That day, Hanneman and seven other members of the Minneapolis Police Department’s SWAT team served no-knock search warrants at a Bolero Flats apartment in Minneapolis. While conducting the search warrant, Hanneman shot Locke, who was sleeping on a couch in the apartment and not named in the warrant.

The officers had probable cause pick up and holds to arrest Speed and two others for murder and for aiding an offender afterward. He lived in that apartment with his mother.

Accused of fatally shooting Otis Elder, 38, on January 10, 2022, Speed was arrested on February 8, 2022. Two defense attorney appeared on Speed’s behalf when the teenager appeared in a juvenile court hearing via video before Judge Stephen Smith.

Speed was charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Prosecutors have filed a motion to have him tried as an adult.

Smith ordered that Speed remain in custody. The court found sufficient grounds to be concerned for public safety, according to the judge.

In September 2020, Speed was accused of shooting a man in the thigh in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. After pleading guilty to one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, he was placed on supervised probation until age 21 and sent to a juvenile facility in Minnesota.

The teenager allegedly violated probation after failing to attend school regularly and testing positive for marijuana. In October 2021, he was placed in his mother’s custody and put on electronic monitoring for 30 days.

In 2018, Speed’s brother Marlon Cornelius Speed, 23, allegedly threatened to spit on and beat up a police officer during a traffic stop. In 2019, Marlon pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of obstructing the legal process and interfering with an officer.

In November 2021, Marlon was accused of choking his sister and was charged with domestic assault by strangulation. He allegedly hit his girlfriend with a belt and his sister tried to intervene.
