Uganda’s David Onama earns 1st UFC win, knocks out Gabriel Benitez in Enterprise, Nevada

Fighting out of Uganda by way of Kansas City, Missouri, United States, David “Silent Assassin” Onama, 27, was one of the winners at the Ultimate Fighting Championship event “UFC Fight Night 201,” also known as “UFC on ESPN+ 59” or “UFC Vegas 48.” It was his first victory in the mixed martial arts promotion based in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.

Featuring 12 MMA bouts, “UFC Vegas 48” was held at UFC Apex in Enterprise, Las Vegas Valley, Clark County, Nevada on February 19, 2022. In the seventh bout of the evening, Onama fought Gabriel “Moggly” Benitez, 33, of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico at a catch weight of 148lbs.

Referee Mark Smith stopped the catchweight bout after 4 minutes and 24 seconds in the first round. Onama knocked out Benitez via punches.

The victory improved Onama’s professional MMA record to 9 wins and 1 loss. On the other hand, Benitez now has 22 wins and 10 losses.

When Onama made his professional MMA debut on February 23, 2019, he knocked out Francisco “El Indomable” Pintos, 27, of Missouri. After this, Onama either knocked out or submitted seven more opponents namely Raymond Bighead, 36, of Oklahoma, USA, Sam Hernandez, 29, of Minnesota, USA, Antonio “The Mexican Muscle” Castillo Jr., 34, of Massillon, Ohio, USA, Sam Agushi, 33, of Illinois, USA, Justin “O-Town” Overton, 32, of Yukon, Oklahoma, Mike “Plazilla” Plazola, 36, of Waterloo, Iowa, USA and Brad Robison, 38, of Kasas, USA.

On October 23, 2021, Onama made his UFC debut at “UFC Vegas 41” at the UFC Apex. He made history as the first ever Ugandan MMA fighter to compete in the UFC.

However, Onama’s UFC debut was spoiled by Mason “The Dragon” Jones, 26, of Blaenavon, Wales. The Welch MMA fighter defeated his Ugandan opponent via unanimous decision.

Born in Kyangwali, Uganda, Onama is currently based in Kansas City. He trains at Glory MMA & Fitness in Lee’s Summit, Missouri under the tutelage of James Krause.

Onama is 5’11” tall and a blue belt in Brazil jiu-jitsu. Before joining the UFC, he competed in Kansas City Fighting Alliance and Fighting Alliance Championship.
