Curtis Reeves Jr. biography: 13 things about ex-cop from Tampa, Florida


Curtis Reeves Jr. is a retired police officer from Florida, United States. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida but he grew up in Tampa, Florida.

After graduating from Hillsborough High School, Reeves joined the U.S. Navy and worked on submarines. After serving in the U.S. Navy for two years, he was honorably discharged.

Reeves and his wife Vivian Reeves have a daughter named Jennifer Shaw and a son who is a police officer. Here are 13 more things about Curtis:


  1. He was good with guns. He finished second out of 20 when he trained at the sniper school of the U.S. Army.
  2. In 1966, he joined the Tampa Police Department. He was one of the department’s first hostage negotiators.
  3. In 1977, a Tampa Police Department evaluation noted that his forceful personality was an asset.
  4. In 1982, a Tampa Police Department supervisor said in an evaluation that people who perceive him as arrogant and self-serving were wrong.
  5. In 1993, he retired from the Tampa Police Department as a captain.
  6. From 1993 to 2005, he worked as the head of security at Busch Gardens in Tampa where he met Mike Scalise, who became his friend. He was difficult to work with, Christine Cock, who worked in the park’s conservation education program, told the Tampa Bay Times. He was condescending and a control freak, according to Cock’s husband Dave Cock, who worked in the park’s aviary area.
  7. He is 5 years older than Scalise. In 2011, he, Nicole, Scalise and Scalise’s wife toured every island in Hawaii, USA. He spent his retirement with Vivian in Hernando, Florida while he suffers from bursitis in his shoulder, arthritis, hypertension and respiratory issues.
  8. Since October 2012, a weapons ban has been in place at The Grove 16, a movie theater in Wesley Chapel, Pasco County. But at 1:20 p.m. on January 13, 2014, he was carrying a .380-caliber pistol while inside The Grove 16 to watch “Lone Survivor” with Vivian and their son, who is a police officer, along with 22 other people. Also inside the movie theater were an off-duty deputy sheriff from Sumter County, Florida, two nurses, Vietnam veteran Charles Cummings, then 68, Cummings’ son Alex Cummings, Chad Oulson, 43, and Oulson’s wife Nicole Oulson, then 33. He was allegedly annoyed by Chad, who was noisily texting. After a series of argument between Chad and him, Chad allegedly threw popcorn in his face so he opened fire, fatally shooting Chad and wounding Nicole. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
  9. He never lost his temper during the times he, Nicole and Scalise went to the movies before Chad’s fatal shooting, Scalise told the Tampa Bay Times on January 18, 2014.
  10. After his release from jail on bond in July 2014, he stayed at home under house arrest with a global positioning system (GPS) monitor.
  11. On July 26, 2019, Judge Kemba Lewis denied his motion that would have allowed him to give up his ankle monitor and leave his house with fewer restrictions.
  12. On February 21, 2022, opening statements started in his second-degree murder trial of Chad before Pasco-Pinellas Circuit Judge Susan Barthle. He pleaded not guilty on the grounds of self-defense. Tampa attorney Richard Escobar led his defense team.
  13. He was 79 years old when a six-person jury acquitted him in Dade County, Florida on February 25, 2022.
