Ex-Arkansas High School astronomy teacher Edward Jasiel Hernandez arrested in Texarkana


Edward Jasiel Hernandez, 25, was employed as an astronomy teacher at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, Miller County, Arkansas, United States from August 9, 2021 to February 28, 2022. In October 2021, school administrators warned him about his interactions with female students.

Hernandez allegedly gave his personal phone number to one of the school’s female students before they started meeting to drive around in his car some evenings. He allegedly smoked marijuana with her and bought her vapes and alcohol.

On December 31, 2021, Hernandez allegedly met with the student, then 15, near a house in Texarkana where she was staying with a relative. He allegedly had sex with her in his car then gave her Plan B medication to avoid a pregnancy.

As shown by video surveillance, the student enter Hernandez’s classroom on different dates in February 2022. He turned off the lights after she entered until just before she left.


On February 26, 2022, the girl’s parents reported the alleged sexual abuse to police. Upon receiving information about the alleged encounters, the Arkansas High School principal confronted Hernandez and told him that he would be placed on leave pending investigation but immediately after, the astronomy teacher resigned.

On March 30, 2022, Hernandez was arrested in Texarkana and booked into the Miller County Jail in Texarkana. Bail has yet to be set.

Hernandez was charged with four counts of sexual assault. If convicted, he faces six to 30 years on each count.
