Robert William Staton, 33, of Rustburg, Campbell County, Virginia, United States and his girlfriend welcomed their daughter in February 2021. He was accused of breaking into a property along New Chapel Road in Rustburg on March 24, 2022.
The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office returned all the stolen property to the victim. Staton was charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny.

At around 1:00 p.m. on July 5, 2022, Staton was found dead at the entrance of First St Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Rustburg. He was fatally shot in the parking lot of the church allegedly by Michael Cerillo, 52, of Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina, USA.
On July 7, 2022, Cerillo was arrested without incident at his residence in Lexington and charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held in North Carolina without bond pending extradition.
Aside from Rustburg, Staton lived in other parts of Virginia including Lynchburg. The distance between Rustburg and Lynchburg is 17.7km.
Rustburg was named for Jeremiah Rust, who donated 50 acres of his land for the village in 1784. It is the county seat of Campbell County.
