Punta Gurda, Florida teacher Kelly Simpson accused of hiding missing boy in Port Charlotte


Kelly Simpson, 31, of Port Charlotte, Charlotte County, Florida, United States is employed by Charlotte County Public Schools. She is an English teacher at Charlotte High School in Punta Gurda, Charlotte County.

On August 12, 2022, a male Charlotte High School student was reported missing by his parents. While having knowledge of the boy’s missing or endangered status, Simpson picked him up from an unknown location and concealed him inside her house in Port Charlotte, according to detectives with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.


The detectives received information from the boys’ parents that led them to Simpson’s house in Port Charlotte. On August 17, 2022, the boy was found inside the house.

Charlotte Country Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Simpson. She was arrested and charged with interfering with the custody of a minor.

After Simpson’s arrest, the Charlotte County Public Schools placed her on administrative leave from her position at Charlotte High School. She has bonded for $5,000.

Punta Gurda was incorporated as a city in 1887. The city is home to five public schools namely the Baker Pre-K Center, Charlotte High School, East Elementary School, Punta Gorda Middle School and Sallie Jones Elementary School.

Former Major League Baseball player Matt LaPorta, 37, and bicycle motocross (BMX) cyclist Amanda Mildred Carr, 32, were both born in Punta Gorda. Lynne Matthews is the incumbent mayor of the city.
