Yuba City, California’s Juan Almanza Zavala, Janette Pantoja found dead; Truckee’s Kiely Rodni still missing

Juan Almanza Zavala, 36, and Janette Pantoja, 28, were both residents of Yuba City, California, United States. They dated from 2012 to 2020 and remained friends after breaking up.

On August 6, 2022, Zavala and Pantoja went to Reno, Washoe County, Nevada, USA together to attend the Hot August Nights Festival, a music and car show in Reno. They were last seen driving a blue Ford Explorer and were supposed to go back to Yuba on the same day.

At around 11:30 p.m., Pantoja spoke to her younger sister Alejandra Pantoja and told her that she was on her way home. At around the same time, Janette spoke to her current boyfriend and told him she was 30 minutes from home.

However, neither Zavala nor Janette returned and their phones were also turned off. On August 7, 2022, their families reported them missing.

On August 17, 2022, a man called 911 and reported a car that appeared to have crashed near Highway 20 and Poker Flats Road in California. Authorities found Zavala and Janette dead outside the car.

The crash site is about 70 miles from the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, Nevada County, California where around 200 juveniles and young adults gathered on August 6, 2022 for a senior farewell party. One of them is Kiely Rodni, 16, of Truckee, who went missing.

The last ping from Rodni’s cellphone came in at 12:30 a.m. that day. Wearing a black spaghetti strap bodysuit, green Dickies brand pants with a black grommet belt and black Vans shoes, she was loaned a black hoodie with a quote from a Lana Del Rey poem inscribed on it.

“You don’t want to be forgotten,” the quote reads. “You just want to disappear.”

On August 7, 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation joined the search for Rodni. She and her 2013 silver Honda CR-V are still missing.

There is a $75,000 reward for information leading to Kiely Rodni‘s whereabouts. Anyone with information is asked to call the Placer County Sheriff’s Office’s tip line at 530-581-6320. Tipster may remain anonymous.
