Remains of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania’s Joan Marie Dymond identified

Joan Marie Dymond was 14 years old when she went missing from her home in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. She is the daughter of George Francis Dymond Sr. and Anne Rose Karaliunas Dymond.

Born in Ashley, Luzerne County, George was a World War II veteran. On August 4, 1984, he died at the age of 70.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Anne was a sewing machine operator at Stanley Manufacturing in Wilkes-Barre. On September 2, 2000, she died at the Hospice Community Care of Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre at the age of 75.


On November 17, 2022, people were searching for scrap metal in debris along Alden Mountain Road in Newport Township, Luzerne County when they found several teeth and a skull with the first cervical vertebrae. After being examined by a forensic odontologist, the skeletal remains were sent to the University of Texas in Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing.

On September 16, 2022, the Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that the remains are those of Joan. Details about the cause of her death have yet to be released.


When Joan went missing, both of her maternal grandparents Martin Karaliunas and Petronella Packauskas Dwilinski Karaliunas were still alive. Martin was born in Luzerne, Luzerne County while Petronella was born in Lithuania.

On August 20, 1971, Martin died in Wilkes-Barre at the age of 75. In June 1983, Petronella died in Wilkes-Barre at the age of 83.
