Both Rayquawn Tillman, 25, and Ethan Maddi, 18, are residents of New York City, New York, United States. They did not know each other.

At around 11:30 a.m. on September 12, 2022, Tillman was caught on camera picking up a brick in front of a hotel in Chelsea, Manhattan, New York City and hiding it behind him. He used that brick to pummel Maddi in the face then ran away.

Tillman returned to grab Maddi’s backpack and disappeared down the block. An eyewitness called 911 while the victim tried to stand and collapsed on the sidewalk.

Maddi grew up in New York City. He is a rapper who performs under the name Zetain and a senior high school student of the New York City Museum School in Chelsea.

While on a break from school, Maddi was sitting on a stoop eating his lunch alone when he was attacked by Tillman. Because of the attack, the victim’s left orbital bone and left sinus were broken and he had a laceration outside and inside the lip.

Emergency medical services (EMS) rushed Maddi to Lenox Hill HealthPlex in Manhattan for treatment. He has been released from the hospital in stable condition.
