Dr. Lili Xu, 60, of Oakland, Alameda County, California, United States was a dentist who practiced in Oakland and Castro Valley, Alameda County. She was with her boyfriend Nelson Peter Chia, 73, of Oakland when she was fatally shot on August 21, 2022.
Just after 2:00 p.m. that day, Xu and Chia pulled up in their Mercedes to park on the side of the street in Little Saigon, Oakland when a white, four-door Lexus pulled up. A man exited the Lexus and fired multiple rounds, striking the dentist, who later died in the hospital.
It was originally thought to be an attempted robbery gone wrong. But on October 27, 2022, Chia and Hasheem Fakhriddem Bason, 33, of Stockton, San Joaquin County, California were arrested in Xu’s fatal shooting.
Chia and Bason were booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Alameda County. On October 28, 2022, Chia took his own life while in custody.
“This case was not about race,” Oakland Police Department chief LeRonne L. Armstrong stated. “This case was about greed. Some tried to use this case as a way of dividing our community. My hope is we can come together and support Xu’s family and our community, who have all experienced this tragedy.”
The Oakland Police Department has yet to confirmed whether or not Chia hired Bason to shoot Xu. Aside from Oakland, Bason has lived in other parts of California including Oakland and Mountain View and he previously lived in Miami, Florida, USA.
