West Harlem, New York City’s Joan Thompson stabs man inside Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Manhattan

Joan Thompson, 41, of West Harlem, New York City, New York, United States is a semi-regular customer of Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Manhattan, New York City. She was there with a younger woman on the evening of November 4, 2022.

While Thompson and her companion were dining at the restaurant that evening, a group of nine or 10 customers were loudly complaining to a hostess about their check. It led to a chaos when other diners got involved.


A male diner, 24, allegedly punched the woman Thompson was with. Because of this, Thompson allegedly grabbed a steak knife, approached the man and stabbed him in the back.

Thompson and her companion ran off without paying their bills. The man she allegedly stabbed was taken to a NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City in stable condition.

At 2:00 a.m. on November 5, 2022, Thompson was arrested. Charged with assault and menacing, she appeared Manhattan Criminal Court.


Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, Ruth Fertel founded Ruth’s Chris Steak House in 1965. In 2002, she died of lung cancer in New Orleans at the age of 75.

Ruth’s Chris Steak House is now based in Winter Park, Florida, USA. Currently, it has more than 100 steakhouses not only in the U.S. but also in Aruba, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore and Taiwan.
