Dustin J. McCann, 30, of Conroe, Montgomery County, Texas, United States was recently in Florida, USA. Aside from Conroe, he has lived in different parts of Texas including Azle, Fort Worth, Keller, Cleveland and Haslet.
On the evening of November 21, 2022, McCann was inside the Soho Saloon on South Howard Avenue in Tampa, Hillsborough, Florida. After repeatedly using racial slurs toward a black security guard, the Conroe resident was removed from the bar by security.
According to witnesses, McCann drove away once he got inside his car parked in a lot across the street. While firing multiple shots into the air, he allegedly shouted, “White power!”
When Tampa Police Department officers arrived at the Soho Saloon at around 9:00 p.m., McCann was no longer at the bar. After identifying him, detectives obtained a warrant for his arrest.
On November 22, 2022, McCann was located and arrested with the help of officers from the Arcadia Police Department in Arcadia, DeSoto County, Florida. He was charged with one count of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.
All of the charges filed against McCann will be enhanced with evidencing prejudice while committing an offense under a Florida hate crime law. Third-degree felonies are reclassified to second-degree felonies under the law, which increases penalties for crimes committed while showing prejudice.
“Racist conduct like this has no place in our community, which is why our Tampa Police Officers worked swiftly to find this suspect in less than 24 hours and bring him to justice,” Tampa Police Department chief Mary O’Connor stated. She added that McCann “will now be held accountable for his criminal actions.”
McCann is no longer in custody. On November 23, 2022, the Conroe resident bonded out.
