Evergreen, Colorado’s Kyle Staebell charged with making threats to commit mass violence

Kyle William Staebell, 33, of Evergreen, Jefferson County, Colorado, United States graduated from Evergreen High School on Buffalo Park Road in Evergreen. Aside from Evergreen, he has lived in other parts of Colorado including Lakewood, Arvada and Crested Butte.

In December 2022, Staebell allegedly circumvented security at a performing arts group in Colorado and entered restricted parts of the building. When law enforcement executed a search warrant at his house in Evergreen, he told the authorities that he did enter the performing art group’s building through an unlocked door.

According to Staebell, he wanted to “conduct an orchestra with a Harry Potter wand” that he had found. Authorities also found at his house what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail.

Just after 1:00 a.m. on January 16, 2023, Staebell sent a message to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) office in Denver, Colorado saying he would “do a mass shooting at the denver [sic] FBI office tomorrow!” On the same day, he made threats of violence to an office of the Department of Homeland Security and the Colorado-based performing arts group.

A Twitter account associated with Staebell posted threats of mass shootings at both the FBI offices and the Department of Homeland Security. He emailed the performing arts group’s ticketing email saying he was “going to do a mass shooting”.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office takes very seriously any threat to commit mass violence,” U.S. attorney for Colorado Cole Finegan, 66, stated. “We commend our law enforcement partners for taking swift action to investigate this case. We specifically want to thank the FBI, the Denver Police Department, the Lakewood Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.”
