Did Huu Can Tran shoot 20 people celebrating Lunar New Year in Monterey Park, California?

Huu Can Tran is accused of opening fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, California, United States at 10:22 p.m. on January 21, 2023. Less than 20 minutes later, he walked in with a firearm at Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio in Alhambra, San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County.

Earlier in the day, the Star Ballroom Dance Studio had hosted a festival celebrating the eve of the Lunar New Year, a major holiday in many Asian communities. White tents and a stage had been set up for the festivities.

At the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, 20 people were shot. Ten of them, five men and five women, did not survive while the other 10 are in the hospital.

No one was injured at the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio. Some individuals were able to wrestle the firearm away but the gunman fled the scene in a white cargo van.

Just before 1:00 p.m. on January 22, 2023, a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team swarmed the van and smashed its windows in the parking lot of Tokyo Central, a Japanese grocery store in Torrance, Los Angeles County. Tran was found dead inside the vehicle.

Two armored vehicles were positioned in front of the van and behind it. Officers in fatigues and body armor were at the rear of one of the police vehicles.

Tran appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel. Before the SWAT Team approached the vehicle, at least two bullet holes had been visible in the driver’s-side window.

It appeared that Tran had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has yet to offer details about a possible motive.
