Why FBI arrested El Paso, Texas teacher Orlando Solis

Orlando A. Solis, 46, of El Paso, Texas, United States used to work at Chapin High School in El Paso as a math teacher. He recently lost the job after being arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Aside from teaching, Solis also served as an adviser of Chapin High School’s robotics club. While employed by the school, he allegedly sent nude photos and explicit text messages to a girl he believed was 13 years old.

Unbeknownst to Solis, the person he sent the photos and messages to was an undercover agent. It was part of an operation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, which is looking at the enticement of minors on social networking.

On January 23, 2023, an investigation into Solis started. On February 2, 2023, FBI agents arrested him.

After arresting Solis, the FBI office of El Paso contacted the El Paso Independent School District regarding an investigation against the teacher. The district was not aware of any pending charges or allegations against him prior to this.

Solis was charged with attempted transfer of obscene material to minors. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Along with the El Paso Independent School District Police Department and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division, the Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force of the FBI office of El Paso is investigating the case. On behalf of the government, assistant U.S. attorney Sarah Valenzuela is prosecuting the case.
