Did Torrance, California’s Carlos Medina shoot David O’Connell in Hacienda Heights?

David Gerard O’Connell of Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles County, California, United States has died. He was 69.

Born in Glanmire, County Cork, Ireland, O’Connell was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on July 10, 1979. On July 21, 2015, Pope Francis appointed O’Connell titular bishop of Cell Ausaille and an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

On February 18, 2023, O’Connell as late for a meeting so a deacon went to his house in Hacienda Heights. The deacon found the bishop dead in his bed and called 911.

The bishop had a gunshot wound to his upper torso. There were no signs of forced entry at his residence.

O’Connell was shot allegedly by his housekeeper’s husband Carlos Medina, 65, of Torrance, Los Angeles County. Medina himself had done some work around the bishop’s house.

On February 20, 2023, Medina was arrested at his home in Torrance after an hourslong standoff with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office deputies. His wife is fully cooperating with investigators.
