Samantha Maldonado of Chicago, Illinois, United States has died. She was 26.
Originally from Ecuador, Maldonado was an engineer. In 2022, she moved to Chicago.
One of Maldonado’s co-workers in Chicago was Alejandro Arellano, 31, of Chicago. They had been in a relationship for about six months before breaking up in the second week of March 2023.
In 2014, Arellano allegedly pulled a knife on someone. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assaults but the case was dismissed.
On March 11, 2023, Arellano and Maldonado were together at Miller’s Pub in the Loop in Chicago. At around 1:20 a.m., she was seen running out of the bar.
Arellano chased Maldonado. She tried to find refuge from him on a platform at the Chicago Transit Authority station at Wabash Avenue and Adams Street in Chicago.
Maldonado tried to hide behind a CTA equipment box and board an arriving train but Arellano pushed her away from the open doors. When she tried to walk away, he allegedly grabbed her and stabbed her at least four times, including in the stomach, chest and left arm.
After collapsing in the middle of the street, security guards from Miller’s Pub rushed to her aid. When they asked her who had stabbed her, she mentioned Arellano’s first name.
Later, Maldonado gave paramedics the full name of Arellano and identified him as her attacker. She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Hours later, Arellano was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder. On March 13, 2023, he was ordered held without bail.
