Arvada, Colorado’s Alexa Bartell hit by large rock; Joseph Koenig, Nicholas Karol-Chik, Zachary Kwak arrested

Alexa Bartell of Arvada, Colorado, United States has died. She was 20.

Bartell was the youngest employee of Commercial Flooring Services in Denver, Colorado. Her mother Kelly Bartell, 51, of Arvada also works for the same company as a corporate secretary and a senior accountant.

At around 10:04 p.m. on April 19, 2023, a rock was thrown through a windshield of a car in Westminster, Colorado. The driver of the car was not injured. 

At 10:36 p.m., a rock was thrown through a windshield of a car in Rock Creek, Colorado Springs, Colorado. The driver suffered minor injuries.

At 10:37 p.m. a rock was thrown at the body of a Toyota. The driver was not injured.

At around 10:45 p.m. on April 19, 2023, Alexa was on the phone with a friend while driving her Chevy Spark on Indiana Street in Jefferson County, Colorado on the way home when suspects threw a large rock at her car. The rock went through the windshield and fatally struck her.

The car drove off the road and into a field. The friend tracked the found and found her fatally injured in her car.

At 12:15 a.m. on April 20, 2023, a rock was thrown through a windshield of another car in Arvada. It resulted in minor injuries to the driver.

The rocks were thrown from a moving vehicle, a black 2016 Chevy Silverado. Arvada residents Joseph Koenig, 18, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik, 18, and Zachary Kwak, 18, were allegedly inside the vehicle that evening but it is still unclear who among them drove the car and who threw the rocks.

On April 26, 2023, Koenig, Karol-Chik and Kwak were arrested in connection with Alexa’s death. The three suspects are high school seniors attending three different schools namely Ralston Valley High School in Arvada, Standley Lake High School in Westminster and an online school.

Koenig, Karol-Chik and Kwak are being held without bail. They were each charged with first-degree murder with extreme indifference and additional charges are expected to be filed against them.
