A teenager, 16, from Dania Beach, Broward County, Florida, United States called 911 at around 10:00 a.m. on May 12, 2023 and told an operator that they are “about to do a bombing” at South Broward High School in Royal Poinciana, Hollywood, Broward County. The school was immediately evacuated.
Minutes later, the teenager called 911 again and threatened to “commit a shooting” at South Broward High School and Attucks Middle School in Hollywood. Because of this, Attucks Middle School was secured in place.
In the hours that followed, the teenager proceeded to make additional false bomb threats calling into Coconut Creek High School in Coconut Creek, Broward County, Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Broward County, Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs, Broward County and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County. This disrupted everyday functions, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators determined that there was no actual threat after monitoring the cameras at the schools affected and searching all locations. The teenager, who does not attend any of the schools, was located and arrested.
The investigators took the teenager to Broward County’s Juvenile Assessment Center for processing. The teenager was charged with written threats to kill, false report of a bomb or firearm and disruption of a school function.
South Broward High School is a marine science magnet school. It is one of the more ethnically and socioeconomically diverse high schools in Florida.
Supermodel Janice Dickinson, 68, is an alumna of South Broward High School. National Football League player Marquise Brown, 25, also attended the school where he ran track.
