Brandon Johnson is the 57th mayor of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, United States. The city is around 40 miles away from Elgin, Illinois.

Johnson was born in Elgin to Andrew Johnson and Wilma Jean Johnson, who were occasional foster parents. Andrew and Wilma raised their 10 children in Elgin.
Andrew was a pastor who worked at the Elgin Mental Health Center in Elgin. In 1995, Wilma died of congestive heart failure.
Brandon is an alumnus of Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois where he earned his bachelor’s degree in youth development and his master’s degree in teaching. He and his wife Stacie Rencher have three children together.
Before becoming a politician, Brandon worked as a social studies teacher at Edward Jenner School and George Westinghouse College Preparatory High School, which are both in Chicago. In 2011, he became an organizer with the Chicago Teachers Union, which represents not only teachers but also clinicians and paraprofessionals in the Chicago public school system.
During the Chicago mayoral and aldermanic elections in 2015, Brandon helped lead field campaigns. From December 3, 2018 to May 15, 2023, he was a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners from the first district.
On March 27, 2023, Brandon turned 47. On May 15, 2023, he assumed office as the new mayor of Chicago.
