In February 2022, Schaefer started dating Stone. Months later, her sons came to live with her, her daughter and Stone in DeLand.
On May 9, 2023, Schaefer called 911 to report Stone had severely beaten her son, 5, at their home in DeLand. Stone allegedly used a mop to beat the boy as a punishment for wetting the bed and she later mopped the spot where the boy was physically abused.
On the same day, Stone was arrested and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach. He is being held without bail.
Schaefer was present and stood by while Stone beat the boy, video evidence indicated. It was one of the several instances where the boy was visibly injured and limping while in her care.
The boy had multiple injuries including a fractured skull. He was rushed to Advent Health DeLand in Deland and was later transferred to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Orange County, Florida.
After Stone was arrested, the Community Partnership for Children fired Schaefer. On June 4, 2023, she was arrested in Pasco County, Florida.
Among the 25 charges Schaefer is facing are child abuse, child neglect, false imprisonment, failure to report child abuse, conspiracy to commit those crimes and evidence and witness tampering. A GoFund Me page was created for her three children.
