Henry Choate as a black man who died at the age of 18. He was working on a road construction project in Coffee County, Tennessee, United States.

When Choate visited his grandfather Henry Clay Harlan, 85, in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, a white girl Sarah Harlan, 16, claimed she had been attacked by a young black man. Henry was born into slavery and was not related to Sarah.

Choate was arrested as the suspect although Sarah said she could not identify him as the perpetrator. On November 13, 1927, a mob lynched him at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia.

Recently, country music singer Jason Aldean, 46, filmed a scene at the Maury County Courthouse as part of the music video of his new song “Try That in a Small Town“. In the scene, he was performing the song in front of the courthouse where Choate was lynched on November 13, 1927.

“Try That in a Small Town” was released on May 22, 2023. Its music video was released on July 14, 2023.

Kelley Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, Tully Kennedy and Kurt Allison wrote “Try That in a Small Town”. It is the lead single to Aldean’s upcoming 11th studio album. 

On the Billboard Country Airplay chart dated June 3, 2023, the song debut at number 24. It later debut at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Aldean’s highest-peaking song.
