On February 24, 1987, Henry was found dead in a field at the corner of East Church Avenue and South Fig Avenue in Fresno. She had multiple stab wounds.

Authorities believed Henry was murdered in the parking lot of a church across the street and dragged to the field several days before her body was found. They failed to find witnesses or identify her killer and the case went cold.

In 2009, a detective assigned to the Fresno Police Department‘s Cold Case Unit reopened the investigation. The California Department of Justice Fresno Regional Laboratory analyzed the autopsy of Henry’s body and evidence from the crime scene.

In February 2022, the Fresno Police Department was notified that deoxyribonucleic acid tests linked Sears to the crime. The department was able to obtain a warrant for his arrest with the help of the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office.

On July 21, 2023, Sears was arrested and booked in the Fresno County Jail in Fresno. He is being held on more than $1 million in bail.

On August 7, 2023, Sears will be back in court. The case is eligible for the death penalty, according to Fresno County district attorney Lisa Smittcamp.
