Erica Lawson, 21, of Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, Kentucky, United States has been arrested. In February 2022, she gave birth to a girl.
In early July 2023, an uncle of the girl contacted the police department of Middlesboro, Bell County, Kentucky to report that she was abused. However, he did not know where she was at the time and the department could not locate her.
On July 28, 2023, the girl was admitted to Middlesboro ARH Hospital in Middlesboro. She had severe injuries and showed signs of sexual and physical abuse.
Due to the extent of the girl’s injuries, she was flown out to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, USA. The girl was placed on life support.
However, the toddler’s injuries were too severe for her to recover. On July 30, 2023, she passed away.
Middleboro Police Department officers began investigating who was responsible for the girl’s death. They arrested Lawson after interviewing her.
Lawson was charged with second-degree manslaughter, first-degree criminal abuse against a child under 12, first-degree wanton endangerment and failure to report child neglect. She was booked into the Bell County Detention Center in Pineville, Bell County.
Bond for Lawson was set at $1 million. The Middleboro Police Department is expected to arrest another suspect soon.
