Dustin Riley Grimes of Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama, United States has died. He was 40.
On the morning of November 4, 2023, Jordan Cesar Hernandez, 35, of Decatur, Morgan County, Alabama and Auburn Renee Moore, 36, of New Hope, Madison County, Alabama allegedly burglarized the residence of Grimes and Grimes’ wife Karen Armstrong Grimes, 41, in Moulton.
During the burglary, Dustin was fatally shot in his bedroom while protecting Karen. Afterwards, she was allegedly kidnapped by Hernandez and Moore.
The two kidnappers allegedly forced Karen to withdraw money from an automated teller machine. That was where Karen managed to escape and run to a nearby convenience store where she called 911.
In the evening, Moore was arrested in Decatur and booked into the Lawrence County Jail in Moulton. She was charged with murder, robbery and kidnapping.
On the afternoon of November 5, 2023, Decatur Police Department officers tried to stop a vehicle being driven by Hernandez. However, he refused to stop and led the officers on a pursuit.
During the chase, Hernandez fired multiple shots out the window of the car towards the officers. He fled on foot into the woods after he crashed his car.
Later, Hernandez was arrested and charged with with murder, robbery, kidnapping, attempted murder and murder. He was booked into the Limestone County Jail in Athens, Limestone County, Alabama without bond.
According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, a third person is involved. The suspect’s identity is being withheld for investigative purposes.
