Dua Lipa, 28, of Albania and the United Kingdom has released her new single “Houdini“. Its music video was directed by Emmanuel “Manu” Cossu with cinematographer André Chemetoff.
Hailing from Paris, France, Cossu and Fleur Fortuné used to be a director duo known as Fleur and Manu, which directed the music videos of French electronic music group M83 songs including “Midnight City“, “Reunion” and “Wait“. Cossu directed the music video of Gesaffelstein and the Weeknd‘s “Lost in the Fire“, which was released on January 11, 2019.
Chemetoff was the director of photography of the music video of Adèle Castillon‘s song “Rêve“, which was released in France on April 7, 2023. He is also the director of photography of the film “The King of Algiers“, which was released in France on May 24, 2023.
Lipa was born in London, England, U.K. to Kosovo Albanians Dukagjin Lipa and Anesa Rexha Lipa. Anesa is of Bosniak descent.
On June 2, 2017, Dua released her debut studio album “Dua Lipa” via Warner Records. On March 27, 2020, she released her second studio album “Future Nostalgia” also via Warner Records.
Details about Dua’s third studio album have yet to be confirmed. “Houdini” is expected to be the lead single from the upcoming album.
Dua wrote “Houdini” with Caroline Ailin, Danny L. Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. The group served as core collaborators throughout the project.
Parker and Harle produced “Houdini”. Dua shared, “A lot of this album was written in those joyous moments of absolute chaos and how I moved through the world with lightness and optimism of whatever the outcome may be.”
“Houdini” kickstarts the narrative thread that weaves its way through Dua’s upcoming project. According to her, the song “embodies that 4 a.m. feeling when the night is coming to a close and you’re a bit sweaty but you just don’t want the party to end”.
“This track represents the most light and freeing parts of my singledom,” Dua said. “‘Houdini’ is very tongue in cheek, exploring the idea of whether someone is really worth my while or if I’ll ghost them in the end. You never know where something may take you.”
“That’s the beauty of being open to whatever life throws your way,” Dua continued. “I’m looking forward to sharing that feeling of defiant bliss with my fans.”
The “Houdini” music video sees Dua post-rehearsal in a dance hall, revising her choreography under fluorescent lights. The lights reflect in the room’s mirrors, creating an optical illusion as the energy begins to swell.
