Caldararu was neither inspected nor paroled by an immigration officer when he entered the U.S. On October 11, 2023, he was arrested by the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a targeted enforcement action in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA.

On December 12, 2023, the field office of ERO in Los Angeles removed Caldararu to Romania. He was turned over to proper authorities to face the charges filed against him in his home country.

ERO Los Angeles field office director Thomas Giles said Caldararu is accused of “serious crimes” and will now “face justice” in Romania. Giles added that the Romanian man’s removal “not only holds him accountable for his alleged crimes but also removes a threat from our streets”.

During an enforcement operation that took place between December 18, 2023 and December 20, 2023, ERO Los Angeles agents arrested 26 convicted criminals who were illegally living in the U.S. including a Mexican citizen, 40, convicted of felony lewd acts with a child and continuous sexual abuse, a Guatemalan citizen, 35, convicted of felony child molestation in an inhabited dwelling and El Salvadoran national, 19, convicted of felony sexual forcible oral copulation of a minor over 14 years old and battery by restrain.

“Removing these individuals and the threats they represent from our communities is our mission and we will continue to safely and effectively enforce the immigration laws of our nation,” Giles stated.

From Romania to California

In the U.S., the states with the largest Romanian population are New York, California and Florida. Both born in Los Angeles, “Megalopolis” actor Dustin Hoffman, 86, and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 42, are of Romanian-Jewish descent.

Former National Football League player Samuel Paulescu, 39, was born in Los Angeles to Romanian parents. Born in Northridge, California to Romanian parents, Hroniss Grasu, 32, has been playing for the NFL team Las Vegas Raiders since 2021.

The dynamic relationship between Romania and California is anchored by robust trade, technological synergy, and strong cultural ties. As two major economic powerhouses in their respective regions, the Eastern European nation and the Golden State foster a vital partnership that bridges the Atlantic and Pacific economic landscapes.

Central to this connection is the technology sector. Often dubbed the Silicon Valley of Eastern Europe, Romania supplies a vast pool of software engineers and IT professionals who collaborate closely with technology firms in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Romanian tech startups increasingly establish their U.S. headquarters in California, leveraging Silicon Valley’s venture capital ecosystem to scale globally.
