In 2014, Mohanty graduated from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his internship and residency at Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Riverside, California.
Mohanty worked as a doctor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He is no longer practicing at the hospital.
On May 27, 2022, Mohanty and his fiancée were passengers aboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Honolulu, Hawaii, USA to Boston. He was seated next to a girl, then 14.
The girl was traveling with her grandparents. She accused Mohanty of masturbating until ejaculation during the flight.
On August 10, 2023, Mohanty was arrested and charged with one count of lewd, indecent and obscene acts while in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the U.S. That day, he appeared in federal court in Boston and was released on conditions.
In September 2023, Mohanty was indicted. He opted for a bench trial.
Several passengers sitting in seats near Mohanty and flight attendants onboard on May 27, 2022 said they did not see anything consistent with the girl’s accusation, according to his lawyers. On January 31, 2024, a judge found the doctor not guilty of lewd, indecent and obscene acts on an aircraft.
