Marion, South Carolina’s Jaremy Smith accused of killing Justin Hare, Phonesia Machado-Fore

Jaremy Alexander Smith, 33, of Marion, Marion County, South Carolina has an extensive criminal history in South Carolina. Among his charges were rioting in jail, taking hostages and armed robbery.

Smith is considered a person of interest in Phonesia Machado-Fore‘s death. She was a paramedic crew chief and sergeant with the Florence County Emergency Medical Services in Florence County, South Carolina.

In 2017, Machado-Fore joined the Florence County EMS. On March 14, 2024, she went missing.

On March 15, 2024, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office issued a missing person notice for Machado-Fore. In the morning, Smith was at Interstate 40 in New Mexico, USA with Machado-Fore’s white BMW.

At around 5:00 a.m., New Mexico State Police trooper Justin Hare, 35, was dispatched to Interstate 40 to assist Smith with his flat tire. The latter was trying to wave down other motorists.

Hare parked his patrol car behind the white BMW and Smith walked up to the trooper’s passenger side window. After a short conversation about repairing the tire, Smith allegedly fatally shot Hare and stole the patrol car.

At around 6:15 p.m., Machado-Fore was found dead in Lake View, Dillon County, South Carolina. She was 52.

On March 17, 2024, a gas station clerk recognized Smith and called police. That day, Smith was arrested in the area of Unser Boulevard and Anderson Hill Avenue in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico by Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
