Luis Huesca was a police officer in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was 30.
On April 20, 2024, Huesca was killed in Gage Park, Chicago allegedly by Xavier L. Tate Jr., 22, of Aurora, Illinois. The latter has yet to be arrested.
That day, Tate allegedly used a 40-caliber handgun to shoot Huesca multiple times. The cop was wearing his uniform and was driving from work to his apartment.
Another police officer responding to an unrelated crime found Huesca with gunshot wounds. The latter was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in Chicago where he was pronounced dead.
Huesca’s gun and badge were missing. His sport utility vehicle was recovered near the crime scene.
On April 26, 2024, Tate was identified as the suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest and a judge signed off on charges of first-degree murder in the warrant.
On April 30, 2024, Huesca’s killing was formally classified as a line-of-duty death. That day would have been his 31st birthday.
On March 6, 2024, Tate was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to a residence in Olympia Fields, Cook County, Illinois. On April 24, 2024, he was supposed to be in court in Markham, Cook County for that charged but he did not show up.
