The landscape of global music was firmly reaffirmed this week as South Korean icons BTS secured the coveted Artist of the Year title at the 2026 American Music Awards (AMAs). Also nominated for the category were Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift.
2026 AMAs
Held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on May 25, 2026, the 2026 AMAs served as a resounding testament to the enduring influence of BTS. It marks the second time the septet has claimed the event’s grand prize. The first instance was in 2021 when they became the first Asian act to ever receive the honor.
The victory was part of a triumphant night for the group, consisting of members RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. Beyond the top category, BTS took home the award for Song of the Summer for their track “SWIM,” taken from their chart-topping fifth studio album “ARIRANG”, and were honored as Best Male K-Pop Artist. Additionally, the group celebrated the success of label partners Katseye, who were recognized as the New Artist of the Year. In the Artist of the Year category alone, BTS emerged victorious over a formidable field of music industry heavyweights like Swift, Bieber, Styles and Carpenter.
BTS
The AMAs is uniquely defined by their reliance on public balloting rather than industry panels, turning the event into a high-stakes arena for fan engagement. This format plays directly into the strengths of the ARMY, the band’s highly organized, decentralized global fan base. Since returning in March 2026 from a mandatory hiatus for military service—which concluded in June 2025—the group has experienced a massive resurgence. Their comeback, anchored by the “ARIRANG” album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and an expansive 82-show world tour, has further accelerated their momentum.
During the acceptance speech, leader RM expressed deep gratitude to their supporters. He said, “Since this is a fan-voted award, our biggest thanks and gratitude, as always, go to Armys all over the world.”
The rest of the members shared in the sentiment. Jimin praised fans for their passionate attendance on tour and Jung Kook noting the joy of returning to the stage.
Following the Las Vegas residency of BTS at the Allegiant Stadium, the group is set to continue their global tour, with upcoming dates in Busan, a European leg, and a high-profile appearance at the FIFA World Cup halftime show in New Jersey, USA in July 2026.
