Rodrigo Melgar, 27, has been arrested in connection with a violent sexual assault against a woman walking home from a gym in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles County, California, United States. It prompted law enforcement to seek assistance in identifying potential additional victims.

At around 8:30 p.m. on July 19, 2026, Melgar allegedly grabbed a woman from behind while she was walking home from a gym across a pedestrian bridge located near Laurel Grove Avenue and Valleyheart Drive in Studio City, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County. He allegedly grabbed her by the hair, forcefully pulled her to the ground, and sexually assaulted her.
The attack was halted when witnesses intervened, Melgar to flee the scene before further harm could be inflicted. Following the assault, LAPD detectives initiated an extensive investigation, canvassing more than 50 local businesses to locate and review security video footage.
On July 29, 2026, law enforcement released a community alert flyer detailing the crime. Tips submitted by the public following the media coverage enabled investigators to officially identify Melgar as the primary suspect on July 31, 2026.
On August 3, 2026, Melgar was taken into custody by detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department‘s North Hollywood Station and Metropolitan Division personnel. At around 10:00 a.m. that day, officers executed a search warrant on Burbank Boulevard, west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles where he was apprehended. He was subsequently booked on suspicion of sexual penetration with a foreign object.
Given the severity and nature of the attack, investigators believe Melgar may have targeted other individuals. Detectives noted that he frequently relies on public transit, particularly local bus lines, as his primary mode of transportation across the area.
