Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, is suspected of intentionally setting one of the destructive wildfires raging near Spokane, Spokane County, Washington, United States. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced that he was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree arson in connection with the Old Trails Fire.
Farinacci, who is a resident of Spokane, has a prior felony manslaughter conviction in Arizona, USA. He is currently being held on a $1 million bond.

According to officials, the apprehension was made possible by an alert community member who reported seeing a nervous-looking man bent over near grassy roadside terrain where the fire originated. Detectives reviewed body-worn camera footage and incident reports to pinpoint the fire’s point of origin at that exact location.
Deputies initially released Farinacci after brief questioning. When they subsequently detained him, he was found in possession of matches and a butane lighter.
Spokane County sheriff John Nowels praised the public’s role in the investigation, noting that observant citizens stepping forward was key to the suspect’s swift arrest. Farinacci is scheduled for his first court appearance in Spokane County.
The Old Trails Fire ignited northwest of downtown Spokane before rapidly crossing the Spokane River and sweeping into residential neighborhoods. It is the largest of three major blazes currently threatening Washington’s second-largest city. Together, the wildfires have scorched more than 12.5 square miles, destroyed at least 700 homes and other structures, and forced roughly 67,000 residents to flee their properties.
Returning evacuees faced harrowing scenes of destruction, with entire homes reduced to ash and rubble. The widespread devastation prompted Washington state’s congressional delegation to request expedited emergency federal assistance. Over 1,000 firefighters have responded to the area, utilizing aircraft and ground equipment amid severe drought conditions and scorching summer heat. While lower temperatures and calmer winds offered brief relief to crews battling the uncontained blazes, hot and dry weather is forecasted to return later in the week.
