Situated at a high altitude of over 2,300 meters, it serves as the nation’s premier economic, educational, and cultural hub.

It hosts the headquarters of both the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, giving the city a deeply cosmopolitan atmosphere. The cityscape presents a fascinating juxtaposition of modern high-rises, historical monuments, traditional settlements, and sprawling open-air commerce like the famous Merkato.
Culturally, Addis Ababa reflects the rich ethnic diversity of Ethiopia, blending ancient traditions with rapid modernization. The city is globally renowned for its deeply rooted coffee culture and historical institutions, including the National Museum, which houses the famous early hominid fossil, Lucy.
