Jeonnam-Gwangju
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Unified Special City officially launched on July 1, 2026, marking South Korea’s first metropolitan-level administrative integration between local governments since Gwangju was separated as a direct-control city 40 years ago in 1986.
With a combined population of approximately 3.16 million, the newly established special city ranks among the major metropolitan administrative bodies nationwide. To maintain balanced regional administration and address geographic spans, the unified government operates across three principal office locations—situated in Muan, Suncheon, and Gwangju—rather than consolidating into a single central headquarters.
Following the integration, the head of the special city holds cabinet-level status equivalent to the Mayor of Seoul, granting direct participation in cabinet meetings alongside expanded administrative authorities.
Administrative frameworks, neighborhood boundaries, and regional ordinances are undergoing systematic alignment, while local education and public welfare policies continue to be harmonized under the new special metropolitan structure.
