Puerto Princesa is the only independent city in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines. The region has five provinces namely Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan and Romblon.

Founded as a settlement on March 4, 1872, Puerto Princesa became a city on January 1, 1970 and was recognized as a highly urbanized city on July 21, 2007. It is geographically located in Palawan but independent from the province.

Edward Solon Hagedorn served as the mayor of Puerto Princesa from November 12, 2002 to June 30, 2013 and from June 30, 2022 until his death. Born in Parañaque, Metro Manila, Philippines, he turned 76 on October 12, 2022 and died in Puerto Princesa on October 3, 2023.

On April 29, 2023, Jemimah Joy Zabala represented Puerto Princesa at Miss Philippines Earth 2023 and competed against 27 other candidates at the Toledo City Sports Center in Toledo, Cebu, Philippines. She ranked third and was crowned Miss Philippines Water 2023.
