From Turkey to South Korea
Formal relations between Turkey and South Korea began on March 8, 1957, following military cooperation during the Korean War.
Turkey was one of 16 nations that provided combat troops to the United Nations Command, beginning with the arrival of the 1st Turkish Brigade at the port of Busan on October 17, 1950. Today, the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan holds the physical remains of 462 Turkish soldiers killed in the conflict. The relationship expanded through administrative and economic agreements. Seoul and Ankara signed a sister city agreement on August 23, 1971.
In international athletics, Turkey defeated South Korea 3–2 in the FIFA World Cup 3rd Place Match at Daegu World Cup Stadium on June 29, 2002. During this fixture, Turkish striker Hakan Şükür scored 11 seconds after kickoff (often measured at 10.89 seconds), setting the official FIFA record for the fastest goal in World Cup history.
