Launched by YG Entertainment on Aug. 8, 2016, the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK recently celebrated its first anniversary. In time for the anniversary, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa appeared on the SBS show “Party People.”
“Party People” host Park Jin Young asked the BLACKPINK members about the kind of music they want to pursue in the future. Jennie said she wanted the group to do more performances that are closer to black than pink.
BLACKPINK has yet to perform a fierce hip-hop song, Jennie added. For Rosé, “As If It’s Your Last” is closer to pink and she struggled with their performances of the song.
According to Rosé, she and her fellow BLACKPINK members focused much on being fierce when they were trainees. This is why she felt awkward performing “As If It’s Your Last.”
Park also asked the BLACKPINK members if they had any interesting stories behind their songs. Jisoo revealed that “Boombayah” had a different title originally.
“Boombayah” was originally titled “Oppa-yah,” Jennie added. She explained that Oppa, a term of endearment used by Korean girls to a not-too-much older man or a beloved man, is scattered throughout the song so if the title was “Oppa-yah,” it would feel like the song was completely about finding an Oppa.
On Aug. 30, YGEX will release BLACKPINK’s self-titled album, which is the K-pop girl group’s debut Japanese extended play. The EP has six tracks namely “As If It’s Your Last,” “Boombayah,” Playing with Fire,” “Stay” and the original and acoustic versions of “Whistle.”
In time for the “BLACKPINK” album release in Japan, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa are gracing the cover of the September issue of Nylon Japan. For this project, the K-pop girl group collaborated with fashion brand SHEL’TTER, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
“With Black Pink emerging, there is a lot of anticipation and this ups the ante for girl groups,” Nylon Japan said in a statement obtained by All Kpop. “The girls will be showered with praise from Japanese fans and will be popular for many months.”
