Located in Northern Europe, the Bailiwick of Guernsey is one of the three island territories in the British Islands that are self-governing possessions of the British Crown. The other two are the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Isle of Man.

Jersey and Guernsey are part of the Channel Islands, an archipelago in the English Channel. Although the islands are not part of the United Kingdom, the U.K. is responsible for the defense and international relations of the islands.

In 1204, Guernsey separated from the Duchy of Normandy. The bailiwick consists of the islands of Alderney, Guernsey, Herm and Sark and other smaller islands.
