Johnathon Schaech, 48, is one of lead actors of the Bulgarian-American action horror movie “Day of the Dead: Bloodline.” He plays a zombie named Max.
“Day of the Dead: Bloodline” is a remake of the 1985 horror film “Day of the Dead,” which was written and directed by George A. Romero. The remake was written by Mark Tonderai and Lars Jacobson and directed by Hector Hernandez Vicens.
Released on January 5, 2018, “Day of the Dead: Bloodline” is about a former medical student named Zoe Parker (Sophie Skelton) who reunites with Max, her former stalker, during a supply run in a military bunker where she tends to human survivors. She learns that he has turned into a sentient zombie.
Schaech was asked what drew him to the role of Max in an interview with Comic Book. He said he was really interested in monsters and cited The Incredible Hulk, King Kong, and Bub as examples.
Andy Serkis played the title character in the 2005 epic monster adventure film “King Kong” while Edward Norton played the title character in the 2008 superhero film “The Incredible Hulk.” On the other hand, Bub was played by Sherman Howard in “Day of the Dead.”
“Those creatures intrigued me because they’re trying to get past their physical difference, between how they look on the outside and what they feel on the inside,” Schaech said. “That’s always been intriguing to me.”
During the filming of “Day of the Dead: Bloodline,” Schaech would spend 4 to 4.5 hours in a chair in the mornings for the makeup art effects for his character, according to Skelton. She revealed to Latino Review Media that none of the zombie character’s appearance was CGI.
“It was very real,” Skelton told the publication. “It was an asset to really be able to have that. That’s what you’re able to act against in a scene. You can react to that. It’s really important to have that.”
On the small screen, Skelton played the title character in the 2016 series “Ren” and Brianna Randall Fraser in “Outlander” from 2016 to 2017. On the other hand, Schaech appeared in two episodes of “Quantico” in 2015.
In “Quantico,” Schaech played Michael Parrish, the father of Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra). Before his death, the character was a renowned FBI agent.
After appearing in “Quantico,” Schaech appeared in “Blue Bloods,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and “Impostor.” On the big screen, he is set to star in the drama film “Hellbent” with Martin Henderson, Max Martini and Isabelle Fuhrman.
Joining Schaech and Skelton in the cast of “Day of the Dead: Bloodline” are Jeff Gum, Marcus Vanco, Mark Rhino Smith, Lillian Blankenship, Shari Watson, Rachel O’Meara, Luke Cousins, Lorina Kamburova, Christina Serafini, Debbie Sherman, Ulyana Chan and Nathan Cooper, among others.
