SBG Ireland’s Cian Cowley earns 1st professional MMA win at ‘Brave 13: Europe Evolution’ in Belfast

Representing Straight Blast Gym (SBG) Ireland of Dublin, Ireland, Cian “The Warrior” Cowley earned his first win in a professional mixed martial arts bout on June 8, 2018 at “Brave 13: Europe Evolution,” the first event of Bahrain-based MMA promotion Brave Combat Federation that took place in Europe. It also marked the Irish fighter’s debut in the promotion.

Cowley competed against Oktawian “Obi-Wan” Olejniczak of Poland in a catchweight of 73 kg. It was the last bout on the preliminary card.

The catchweight bout between Cowley and Olejniczak ended at 4:41 of Round 1. The Irish fighter knocked out his Polish opponent via elbows and punches.

“It was an alright performance but I got caught,” Cowley said after his victory. “I don’t really get caught much but he dropped me and fair play to him.”

After defeating Olejniczak at “Brave 13: Europe Evolution,” Cowley improved his professional MMA record to 1 win and 1 loss. When Cowley made his professional MMA debut at “BAMMA 29” on May 12, 2017, he was submitted by David “Demolition Man” Khalsa of England via rear-naked choke.

On the other hand, Olejniczak now has 2 wins and 2 losses. Prior to “Brave 13: Europe Evolution,” he defeated his fellow Irish fighter Steve Owens via unanimous decision at “BAMMA 35” on May 12, 2018.

Taking place at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, “Brave 13: Europe Evolution” featured 12 bouts in total. It was graced by several celebrity athletes including former Bellator MMA fighter Bubba Jenkins, British professional boxer Amir Khan, English MMA fighter Darren “The Gorilla” Till, who competes in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and former UFC Lightweight Champion Conor “Notorious” McGregor, who also trains at SBG Ireland.

The first bout at “Brave 13: Europe Evolution” was supposed to be a lightweight match between Jonathan Reid of Ireland and Constantin Gnusarev of Moldova. However, the bout was cancelled because the Irish contender was ill.

After “Brave 13: Europe Evolution,” Cowley will go to the United States with McGregor to fix some legal matters. On April 5, 2018, the two, along with other friends, attacked a fighters’ van at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

While Cowley was charged with one count of criminal mischief, McGregor was charged with one count of criminal mischief and three counts of assault. They are returning to a courtroom in New York on June 14, 2018.

At “Brave 13: Europe Evolution,” McGregor was on Frans “The Black Mamba” Mlambo’s corner while Till was on Erick Carlos “Indio Brabo” Silva’s corner. Here is a clip featuring Till during the event:
