Many fight fans raised their eyebrows at the unanimous decision victory of Sagetdao “Deadly Star” Petpayathai, 31, of Singapore and Thailand over “Cannon” Ma Jia Wen, 21, of China at “ONE: Spirit of a Warrior” on June 29, 2018. On June 30, 2018, ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong took to Facebook to announce that the controversial decision was overturned.
Ma and Sagetdao competed in the featherweight division at “ONE: Spirit of a Warrior,” which took place at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. It was the seventh bout of the evening.
When referee Olivier Coste raised Sagetdao’s hand as the winner via unanimous decision, Ma was visibly surprised. Now that the decision has been overturned, the Chinese contender becomes the first fighter to defeat the formerly undefeated Thai-Singaporean mixed martial artist.
Sagetdao was the sixth opponent defeated by Ma in ONE Championship. The first five were Chinese fighters Biekemulati “Murad” Nulijiao, 22, and Wang Ya Wei, 24, Filipino fighter Jimmy “The Silencer” Yabo, 37, Indonesian fighter Yohan “The Ice Man” Mulia Legowo, 37, and Pakistani fighter Ahmed “The Wolverine” Mujtaba, 26.
When Ma made his ONE Championship on June 20, 2015 at “ONE: Dynasty of Champions 2,” he knocked out Nulijiao via punches in the second round. The second time Ma won in the promotion was on November 21, 2015 when he defeated Wang via unanimous decision at “ONE: Dynasty of Champions 4.”
Yabo and Legowo lost to Ma at “ONE: Heroes of the World” on August 13, 2016 and at “ONE: Warrior Kingdom” on March 11, 2017, respectively, both via technical knockout. Before facing Sagetdao at “ONE: Spirit of a Kingdom,” Ma submitted Mujtaba via rear-naked choke at “ONE: Visions of Victory” on March 9, 2018.
By defeating Sagetdao at “ONE: Spirit of a Kingdom,” Ma improved his record to 6 wins and 2 losses. The only two opponents the Chinese fighter lost to in the promotion were Di Yuan “Dragon Kid” Huang, 25, of China and Saygid Guseyn Arslaniev, 23, of Russia.
On June 20, 2015, Huang defeated Ma via unanimous decision at “ONE: Dynasty of Champions 2.” On May 6, 2016, Arslanaliev knocked out Ma via punches at “ONE: Ascent to Power.”
On the other hand, Sagetdao’s record downgraded to 3 wins and 1 loss after losing to Ma. The three ONE Championship athletes who previously lost to the Thai-Singaporean fighter were Yabo, Malaysian fighter Kelvin “Ice Man” Ong and Egyptian fighter Mahmoud Mohamed.
