2018 Spanish Super Cup to take place in Morocco before ‘Brave 14’

For the first time, the Supercopa de España or the Spanish Super Cup will be held outside Spain. The Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF) has confirmed plans to stage in Tangier, Morocco the 32nd edition of the annual football super cup contested by the winners of the previous season’s La Liga and Copa del Rey competitions.

The 2018 Spanish Super Cup will take place at the 45,000-capacity Tangier Stadium on August 12, 2018 with a kickoff time of 9 p.m. La Liga and Copa del Rey champions Futbol Club Barcelona will take on Sevilla Fútbol Club, the cup runners-up, in the traditional curtain raiser for the season.

The FC Barcelona has won the Super Cup a record 12 times. The Sevilla FC has lifted the trophy just once in 2007 and finished as runners-up twice.

The announcement of hosting the Spanish Super Cup in Tangier came after the initiative by Bahrain-based mixed martial arts promotion Brave Combat Federation to host the first global MMA in Africa titled “Brave 14.” Held under the patronage of His Majesty the King Mohammed VI of Morocco, the MMA event will take place on August 18, 2018 at the Omnisports Indoor Club in Tangier.

During the “Brave 14” week, Brave CF will host multiple events in Tangier including media day, public weigh-ins and open workouts ahead of the fight night. The fight night will showcase athletes representing 11 nations, which will be the largest broadcast MMA event in the history of Africa.

The growing number of global sporting events in Morocco is identified to develop the economy as a hub for sports initiatives and tourism. Brave CF president Mohammed Shahid said, “Morocco has hosted great sporting events and is strongly growing its potential as a tourist destination.”

“Brave Combat Federation which is led by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa believes in creating a global ecosystem for the sport of mixed martial arts,” Shahid added. “The converging sports media activities in Morocco will bring global attention and value for the athletes who are competing. It was important to wait for the right time. As we analyzed, no other country is better positioned to start our initiatives in the continent of Africa other than Morocco.”
