Sambo vs Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Velimurad Alkhasov, Sean Santella to compete at ‘Brave 14’

Brave Combat Federation will showcase action featuring a clash between a Combat Sambo Champion and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert at “Brave 14” at the at the Omnisports Indoor Club in Tangier, Morocco on August 18, 2018. It will be the first global MMA event in Africa.

One of the bouts at “Brave 14” is between the 2016 Combat Sambo World Champion Velimurad Alkhasov, 27, of Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russia and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Sean “Shorty Rock” Santella, 33, of Whippany, New Jersey, United States. They will compete in the flyweight division.

Alkhasov and Santella will be making their Brave CF debut at “Brave 14.” A win is critical for the both fighters to thrive in a division filled with tough fighters including 10 times International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) World Champion Bruno Malfacine and International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) medalist Hussain Ayyad.

An undefeated fighter, Velimurad secured gold for Russia during the 2016 World Sambo Championships. He currently holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 4 wins, 0 loss and 1 No Contest.

“Brave 14” marks Velimurad’s comeback after going on a hiatus for almost two years. His most recent bout was at “ACB 43: Battle of the Sura” at the Diesel Arena in Penza Oblast, Russia on August 20, 2016 , where his bout against his fellow Grozny native Rasul Albaskhanov ended in a No Contest after being overturned by the promoter.

On the other hand, Santella has 20 wins and 6 losses and is riding a four-bout winning streak. A submission expert, he has 14 out of his 20 career wins coming out of submission.

Santella is undergoing training at the Miller Brothers MMA in Sparta Township, New Jersey. His upcoming flyweight bout against Velimurad will be his second fight in 2018.

In Santella’s most recent bout, which was on March 31, 2018 at “PA Cage Fight 31,” he got the nod of all three judges against Charles “Innerg” Johnson, 27, of Missouri, United States. It was the eighth time the New Jersey native won via unanimous decision.

The match between Alkhasov and Santella will put to test yet again the long standing debate between the effectiveness of Sambo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Meanwhile, here is a “Brave 14” promo:
